SALZBURG MUSEUM | NEUE RESIDENZ

The Neue Residenz – The “New Residential Palace” – is one of the six exhibition locations of the Salzburg Museum. It opened its doors to the public on 30 May 2007 after several years of reconstruction and being fitted with a modern museum installation. Ever since, it has been the aspiration of the Salzburg Museum to present the art and cultural history of the city and region of Salzburg in its collections on the museum’s approximately 3000 m² of exhibition floor space. Modern, exciting, interactive, entertaining and comprehensive – these are the slogans characterising the continually changing exhibitions as well as the permanent exhibition “The Salzburg Myth”. The aim of “The Salzburg Myth” is to show the progress of Salzburg towards becoming a Baroque city and furthermore how the urban structures developed since the end of the archbishopric after 1800, how tourism began to play its role, and how these factors generated the “myth” surrounding this city.

Side by side with this agenda are the changing temporary exhibitions in the Kunsthalle, in the Column Hall on the ground floor, and in the sequence of rooms on the first floor; these provide a stage for the holdings both as monographic presentations and pertaining to cultural history, and also loaned works that deal with Salzburg and the people living and working here. “Taking a broader view” is made possible by international cooperation. It opens the museum’s doors to a dialogue with contemporary art and to a springboard into the twenty-first century.

The Salzburg Museum in the resplendently renovated Neue Residenz on Mozartplatz provides a harmonious, integrated setting for valuable artefacts, aesthetic presentation, fascinating contents and multi-media installations. The Salzburg Museum is living proof that a modern museum can inform and yet at the same time entertain its visitors. For this successful concept the Salzburg Museum was distinguished with the 2009 European Museum Award and the 2007 Austrian Museum Award.
