City Views and Waterworlds — Around the World with Hubert Sattler
As supplement to the 360° view of the City of Salzburg in the great Panorama painting, Johann Michael Sattler and his son Hubert produced paintings showing views of cities and wonders of nature from all over the world. These pictures, which Johann Michael Sattler named Cosmoramas, enabled the public to experience unattainable places at close quarters.
On the upper floor we are showing city views from the second half of the nineteenth century – a time when many people, uprooted by revolutionary upheavals or impoverishment, were forced to leave their old homelands and try their luck in the New World.
On the ground floor Hubert Sattler brings to life the power of water: whether the calm sea in the Lisbon harbour, tumultuous waterfalls and serene river landscapes in the USA, or the deep, cool lakes in the Austrian mountains.
